Wreck Shed

The Georgia Tech Wreck is (depending on who you ask) the true mascot of the school, often seen patroling the streets and paths of campus driven by one of it's prestigous caretakers. However, where the Wreck sleeps and how it and it's sisters is maintained day to day and prepped for its various social functions is a mystery. A mystery we were challenged to bring to light with a new home and base on campus.

01

Site Plan

With a location so close to Tech Green, the Shed complex needed to be an extension of the popular student recreation and lounging spot. The green patio comprised of permeable pavers allows a large public space for students to interact more closely with the Wreck and her caretakers.

Material Precedents

The first focus of this studio was on the material properties and compositions of our buildings. When tasked with choosing a material with which to construct, I chose cross-laminated timber, in part because of its sustainable procurement, and also because of it's ease of use and simplicity in construction. It also helps that gold is a GT standard.

03

Building Composition

To provide not only for the Wreck itself, but also for the club that oversees it's care, I created two bodies of cross laminated timer panels nestles against a granite retaining wall. Each building faces its angled roof south to maximize solar potential from solar panels, as well as day-lighting through skylights.

detailing

The second focus of this studio was to apply construction knowledge into real connection details of our proposals. Notably highlighted is the connection between the gravity retaining wall and its CLT panel attached body, as well as a series of custom panels attached to the skylights to diffuse direct day-lighting.
